Swan Prep 1 on the Ladder Barrel
Pilates Swan is one of the Pilates exercises you can do on a variety of Pilates apparatus. However, the full Swan exercise can take years to fully build up connections to do it. The Ladder Barrel is a useful apparatus to teach and guide the full extension one needs in the Swan. You can work the barrel to feel the articulation. And you can flip over to do a supportive and closed chain Swan. However, if you’re not ready to do the full Swan there are options for you. On the Pilates Ladder Barrel, we have two Swan Prep options. Swan Prep 1 allows you to practice the lift while working straight legs. Something you will need when doing the full Swan. It’s part of the 2nd extension. As this gets stronger and you feel the extension working through the upper back while maintaining strength in the back of the legs you can work the Swan Prep 2. And eventually, bring these two preps to your Swan.
Reach the tailbone towards the heels as your chest reaches forward.
Stand inside the Ladder Barrel with your feet up on the base of the frame. The balls of the feet are on the floor or the platform, legs are parallel. Hips are on the barrel, drape your torso over the barrel. Arms are long reaching from the upper back. Palms facing down. If that is too difficult the hands are behind the head, fingers interlaced, elbows wide, and shoulders on the back.
Reaching through the legs without locking the knees reaching your arms from your back, lift your head and chest. Find a long line from heels to head and fingers. Reach the tailbone towards your heels, frontal hip points up and chest up and forward. Possibly finding a little extension in the upper back. Then reach long to come back to the start position. Repeat.
If going well work to Swan Prep 2 and eventually to Swan.
