Breath-a-Cizer
“Breathing is the first act of life, and the last… above all, learn how to breathe correctly.” Joseph Pilates was obsessed with breathing. He also felt it was important that we learned how to exhale! His desires for us all to learn how to exhale may have lead to him creating his Breath-A-Cizer. In fact, while so many teachers are obsessed with when to breathe in. Joseph Pilates was focused on you exhaling, exhaling, exhaling. The Breath-a-Cizer will strengthen your exhale! Time yourself to see how long you can keep the pinwheel spinning and how long you can exhale for. Practice daily to build up the length of time.
Joseph Pilates was focused on you exhaling, exhaling, exhaling.
Standing tall with legs parallel and hips distance apart. With a short straw inserted into the Breath-a-Cizer, hands hold the handle at the base of your ribs. Elbows bent to the sides. Shoulders wide on your back over your hips and hips over your heels. Place your lips around the straw.
Inhale through your nose and exhale out through your mouth as your round forward as if you were doing a standing roll up. Use your stomach muscles to assist in the exhale. Stay rounded forward until you’ve fully exhaled. Inhale to roll up and repeat.
Work to keep the pin wheel spinning with your exhale or at least continue to exhale for 30 seconds before standing up. Take a moment and repeat. Can you keep the wheel spinning for 15 seconds while continuing to exhale for another 15 seconds, total of 30 seconds. Work your breath for up to 5 minutes.
