Leg Series: Bicycle on the Spine Corrector
Bicycle in Pilates is one of those exercises you do on almost every piece of Pilates apparatus. However, some Pilates Bicycles are easier and some are harder. Bicycle on the Pilates Spine Corrector is a great place to learn and practice your Bicycle to support your Leg Springs in the Air and your High Bicycle on the Mat. If the Spine Corrector isn’t the appropriate height for your body give the same exercise a try on the Small Barrel. When you’re feeling strong see how your High Bicycle is going.
Focus less on how much the knee can bend to the chest & work the reach.
Bicycle is typically done after Beats. So you would already be set up on the Spine Corrector when you moved into this exercise. Start from the Frog position on your Spine Corrector. Heels hugging together and gaze straight up to the ceiling. Collarbones and shoulders wide on your back.
Frog your legs to the high diagonal. While maintaining your gaze to the ceiling. Reach a straight leg long and towards the floor as you bend and pull the other leg in towards your center. Then when your straight leg is as low as it can be without losing connection to your center bend that leg as you straighten the other leg. Continue to Bicycle in this direction for 3-5 reps. Then back pedal.
It’s ok to touch the mat and the barrel. In fact challenge yourself to see how low you can go and how strong your legs can be as you pull your feet to your seat. It will feel like a hamstring curl.
After several in each direction hug the heels together and Frog your legs back in.
